JOB DUTIES: This is a combination position that will require both field and office related activities while providing service within the Building Safety Department. Specifically, this position will conduct inspections of residential and commercial construction projects which includes; inspections for HVAC and other mechanical systems, setbacks, footings, foundations, framing, insulation, drywall nailing, masonry, fireplace, storm water retention, and finals to determine compliance with the adopted codes and manufacturer requirements.

The employee must be able to explain, interpret and provide guidance to the general public, architects, engineers and building contractors to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and city ordinances. In addition, the employee must be able to resolve customer service issues in a polite, courteous and efficient manner; maintain complete and accurate records through the use of computer data entry; be able to compose letters in Microsoft Word; and assist with day-to-day operations of the Building Inspections office. This job is performed under the direct supervision of the Building Official; however, some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment, initiative and interpretation.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by five (5) years of experience in construction or a construction related trade that provides the required knowledge and abilities to perform the work. Preference will be given to those candidates who are certified inspectors with experience in commercial inspection.

Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record; knowledge of building practices, laws, methods, and materials; good reading comprehension; and the ability to read and interpret civil, architectural and structural blueprints, codes and ordinances. As a condition of continued employment, International Code Council certification as a Residential/Commercial Building and Mechanical Inspector is required within 1 year of employment.

Must be able to work outdoors which may involve adverse weather conditions. Must have sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to drive to various locations and move around construction sites for inspection purposes, including climbing ladders and scaffolding, walking on roofs, maneuvering over walls, crawling under floors, etc.
